The coconut is a drupe

A drupe is a fruit which has a fleshy part enclosing a hard part with a seed inside. Other drupes are mangoes, avocados, cherries, olives and the stone fruits such as peaches, plums and apricots.

The young coconut has air in the husk and is filled with water so it is able to float in oceans for months without damage. However, to germinate, the husk must soak up fresh water. A shoot and roots then appear from the eyes of the coconut.
