Turmeric. If it sprouts, then plant it.

Turmeric is being hailed as a wonder food. The active ingredient is curcumin which is a powerful anti-inflammatory. It has been used in Asian cooking forever and gives dishes their golden colour. It  may also be used as a dye.

Cairns Coconut Museum sells delicious, decadent Coconut Nectar & Turmeric which is to-die-for. It is produced by Jimalie Organic Coconut Products: Organic. Sustainable. Fair.

Turmeric, like ginger, forms a rhizome which is like an underground stem that grows horizontally close to the surface. It stores food for the plant so that when the plant dies back, the rhizome is able to produce new growth when the conditions are right.

Turmeric Rhizomes, some with roots.

And a shoot!

So plant it and it will grow into this.

But what to do with Jimalie Organic Coconut Products Coconut Nectar & Turmeric? Indulge yourself! Use it as you would honey to give a golden colour to your desserts.

With banana and Greek yoghurt.

Or add some blueberries.

Or whatever your imagination will allow. Coconut Nectar & Turmeric is absolutely delicious.

Coco-peat for worms

When dead plant material settles in wetlands, it may form peat. Peat is vegetable matter in various stages of decay in a wet, low oxygen environment. Over many years, a peat bog may be established. Humans have long used peat as a fuel. It can also be used as a growing medium for plants because it holds water.

So, good stuff, but peat is a non-renewable resource.

Coco-peat (or coir) is the fibrous material found between the hard outer shell and the husk of a coconut. Brown coir is harvested from mature coconuts and is strong but inflexible. You see mats made of coir. Coco-peat can be bought in compressed blocks and when you add water, the blocks expand and crumble. This forms a lovely moist environment that makes an excellent worm bed. The worms can then be housed in a worm café or a worm farm and they will industriously decompose your organic household waste into wonderful soil conditioner for your potted plants or garden.

Worms are wonderful!

And, coco-peat is a renewable resource.

The are many superstitions around this tradition. One is that the bride does not have to do any housework until the tattoo fades so dark tattoos are popular!
